Update There have been some allegations made about Brooklyn Ray/Taylor B. Barton about serial abuse of people of colour and other queer folks. I no longer support this author or their books. This review will remain visible, but I owe an apology for supporting an author who has done so much harm. These claims came about through what I suppose is a Whisper Network, though I’m not exactly sure when or where this started. I was made aware of the allegations on Twitter against Taylor B. Barton three days before it was revealed that Taylor and Brooklyn Ray were the same person. I chose to support this person despite seeing what many would call a Red Flag (or three). California Skies: A Review Bandits Came Looking …  “Bandits came looking for the legendary emeralds belonging to Maggie’s family, killing her older brother and scarring her face. She can’t change the past, but finding the jewels will help her injured sister recover. In need of reliable muscle, she goes to an old friend of her brother’s: tough-as-nails nonbinary bounty hunter California Talbot. While Maggie expected hard roads and violence, given the tragedy that provoked the journey, she wasn’t expecting the bar fights, snakes, and bandits to be the easy part—and the difficult part to be a growing attraction to someone who’d surely never love her in return.” Reading this again was like a sigh of relief.
